K-9 Unit
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Program includes both patrol and drug detection dogs. The dogs are utilized in the patrol and jail divisions.
 K-9s are assigned to a sworn officer who has been trained as a handler. The dogs live with and become a member of that deputy’s family. Handlers are equipped for an immediate response from their residence when needed. 
Deputies selected as K-9 officers receive an additional stipend for the care and maintenance of the animal and a marked unit is assigned to the officer/dog team.
A K-9 "team" consists of the dog and the dog's handler. A team will train five to six weeks together before becoming certified to work. On an ongoing basis, K-9 teams must train an average of four hours per week to maintain their skills.
